Residential roofing contractors have to be able to ensure their customers that their work is solid, which means the roof they install or repair is watertight and protected from the elements. If you hire an inexperienced roofer to install or maintain your roof, chances are there will be serious problems with it along the way.
One of the most common roofing areas or components where amateurs or DIY enthusiasts make mistakes is flashing installation. Flashing is supposed to protect roofs from water and debris penetration in the most vulnerable parts, such as roof valleys. Here are some of the frequent yet avoidable roof flashing errors:
Mistakes With Valley Flashing
Roofers can use either the woven or the “W” style of flashing installation when it comes to roof valleys. For some reason, some roofers – especially those that use the woven style – have problems making their valley flashings effective and long lasting. As valleys are where plenty of water typically runs, flashing installation should be done right.
Not Installing Step Flashing
The step-flashing method is the correct one for installing flashing against a vertical sidewall, whether you’re installing a new roof or performing a roof repair. Skipping the installation of step-flashing just to save a few bucks can lead to moisture problems. Four inches should be the minimum height and width of step flashing. The end of the flashing should also be turned out so it keeps water away from the wall and running to the gutter.
Not Installing a Drip Edge
This mistake allows water to reach the edge of the sheathing or even the fascia. Installing a drip edge can prevent water from causing damage to your roof, fascia, soffits, siding and walls. You can also add a self-stick membrane over the sheathing and onto the fascia to make your drip edge even more functional.
