Roof materials are measured in “squares”, with one square equaling 100 square feet. Roofing squares are then divided into three bundles. When you contact a contractor to construct a new roof, they’ll calculate how many squares you’ll need, allowing 10% to 15% more for waste and cutting to suit your roof’s unique features, such as hips and valleys, chimneys and other features. Roofing shingles are frequently leftover as a result. Depending on your agreements and terms with the contractor, you may find yourself with an extra bundle or two. Is there anything you can do with leftover roofing shingles?
Use Them for Smaller Construction Projects
Leftover shingles are perfect for minor projects that need roofing materials on them like dog houses, sheds and gazebos. This doesn’t only save you a bit in materials, but it also saves you a trip to the hardware store if you already have the other building materials prepared beforehand. If your outbuilding is in a concealed corner of your property, you may not worry about matching the color or style of the shingles. However, if it is visible from the street, matching its roofing to your home’s is a nice design that draws attention and adds curb appeal.
Allocate Some for Future Repairs
Ice dams or severe storms can cause even the best roofing job to fail. This way, even if the provider no longer supplies your style or color in 5 or 10 years, you’ll be sure to have matching shingles. Just make sure you store them in the appropriate place, and handle them with care. Their storage area’s temperature should be neither too hot (which can soften them) nor too cold (which can also harm them and make their adhesive strip less effective), and they must be shielded from extremes of humidity. Finding the perfect spot for them will keep them in good condition and make them handy when the time comes for roof maintenance, and save you a small amount of money.
Use Them for Decoration
If you have wooden leftover shingles, they are excellent pieces that can be used for internal or external decorations. Cedar and other wood shingles of the same type offer great aesthetic appeal and are considered universally classy if properly used and arranged. Try constructing them as a beautiful accent wall, an eye-catching mural or a one-of-a-kind piece of wall art depending on how many shingles you have on hand. It’s up to you whether you want to paint or stain the room.
